Calling all big kids: there’s a new range of Roald Dahl cocktails for you to sample.
The literary tipples are "the perfect blend of childhood nostalgia and adult naughtiness," says their creator Matt Spencer, who has designed the unusual recipes in time for the legendary author's 100th birthday next week.
Spencer has concocted the drinks exclusively for Barnstaple’s Bull & Bear and is sharing his recipe for Wonka's Choco’mallow Martini with Stylist.co.uk.
He tells us: “I think everyone grew up with Roald Dahl’s books and stories, so, when I found out that next month would have been his 100th birthday, I thought it would be great to do something to celebrate it.
“Cocktails seemed the perfect way to do this, as a lot of his writing features great food and drink imagery, from the chocolate cake in Matilda, to The BFG’s frobscottle and snozzcumber, to all things delicious in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
“Since these are the stories we’ve all grown up with I thought it would be fun to put an adult spin on them and add bit of booze.”
There’s something to suit everyone’s tastebuds, with flavours taken from across Dahl’s works and recreated using unusual ingredients, such as fire cinnamon whiskey, marshmallow vodka, popping candy, white rum, green apple schnapps, and more.
Describing what punters can expect from the drinks, Matt said: “There are four different drinks each based on a different book. Wonka’s Choco’mallow Martini is obviously chocolate based, while George’s Marvellous Medicine is fruity and refreshing, without all the side effects.

“Fantastic Mr Fox’s Cider Punch reminds stalwart readers of the cider he stole from Farmer Bean, and then, of course, there’s the Frobscottle – it’s creamy and fizzy and topped with real-life whizzpoppers.”
He added: “They are just a bit of fun for grown-ups to maybe make them remember reading the books when they were kids and hopefully honour a fantastic author.”
The fun range of guest cocktails will be available exclusively from the Bull and Bear in Mermaid Walk, Barnstaple, Devon from Monday 12 September to Sunday 18 September.
However, if you don’t think you’ve got time to pop down there for yourself, Matt has shared his recipe for Wonka’s Choco’mallow Martini, so that you can recreate it at home.
