And you thought Big Brother occasionally veered into the un-PC? A new Dutch TV game show pits failed asylum seekers against each other for the chance to win cash to spend, once deported to their native land.
On Weg Van Nederland (which means both ‘away from Netherlands’ and ‘mad about the Netherlands’) contestants are quizzed on Dutch culture, language and history, and the winner gets £3,500. The loser’s consolation prize includes tulips and a bullet-proof vest. Refugee groups branded the show “sick”, but the show’s editor-in-chief Frank Wiering said, “The show’s not really mocking asylum seekers but highlighting their plight through humour.”
