It’s official: Elle Woods is returning to the big screen.
Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods first entered our lives back in 2001, proving that femininity, womanhood and the colour pink are not mutually exclusive with intelligence, ambition and determination.
Proceeding to the smash the patriarchy, Woods graduated as a young law student from Harvard in a chic suit, and made a big point of providing support and compassion to her fellow women along the way.
Now, 17 years after the original film first aired, the formidable fictional character is set to grace the big screen once again on Valentine’s Day 2020, according to MGM.
Taking to Twitter, Witherspoon confirmed the rumours (that started swirling earlier this week) with a video of her in a pink bikini floating on a pool lounger.
“It’s true… #LegallyBlonde3,” Witherspoon wrote.
Witherspoon first teased the idea of Legally Blonde 3 back in January.
Speaking with E! Online, Witherspoon explained that she and the Legally Blonde team had definitely “thought about” bringing Woods back.
“I do think that it’s a good time to do it,” she said, adding: “I think women need that kind of positivity right now.”
And, Witherspoon is definitely right about women needing this kind of positivity in 2018.
“I just need somebody really clever to come up with a great idea and we’ll do it,” she promised.
It certainly sounds like they’ve come up with a great idea. Plot or casting details may not have been announced yet, but the third instalment will have a new producer: Witherspoon, herself.
And, of course, people on Twitter have shared their excitement.
“Elle better be president!” one user wrote.
“I’m shook and ready to bend and snap,” another user tweeted.
We predict a box office smash.
