Scroll down to discover our favourite career-based podcasts, and get ready to transform your life for the better.
How To Curate Your Life
In this interview-based podcast, SMUG founder Lizzie Evans chats to different creative entrepreneurs in an attempt to find out how they create a healthy and fulfilling work life balance. In the first season, guests included author and broadcaster Emma Gannon, designer and creator Donna Wilson, and blogger Liz Purvis – all of whom provide essential advice for establishing a work life that will leave you feeling energised, and help you avoid burnout.
Badass Women’s Hour
Back in 2016, broadcaster Natalie Campbell teamed up with fellow entrepreneurs Emma Sexton and Harriet Minter to launch Badass Women’s Hour. In each episode they interview bold and inspiring women who work across lots of different industries, aiming to bring the conversations that women have in private – about work, life, and topical issues – to a wider audience. To get you started, we suggest listening to the recent bonus episode on New Year’s resolutions and goal setting, which features Stylist’s very own Head of Digital Features, Harriet Hall.
Happier in Hollywood
Screenwriters Liz Craft and Sarah Fain originally started recording Happier in Hollywood to share their strategies for survival in the ‘back-biting, superficial, chaotic, unpredictable, and fundamentally insane world’ of Los Angeles, but it’s surprising how much of their advice is universally relevant. Subscribe for relatable, practical advice about how to stay sane in the workplace, and enjoy the added bonus of fascinating insider gossip and celebrity-studded stories.
Make it Happen
Creative coach Jen Carrington is the queen of bitesize advice that will leave you feeling inspired, motivated and ready for anything. Most of the episodes of this podcast clock in at around 5-10 minutes long, and are filled with practical and immediately actionable advice for helping you build an impactful, fulfilling, and sustainable creative life.
The Broad Experience
With each episode clocking in at around 20-30 minutes, The Broad Experience is the career-focussed podcast that’s most likely to be just the right length for your journey to work. Since its first episode back in 2012, host Ashley Milne-Tyte has used the platform to tackle the issues which women face in the workplace – and that includes everything from discrimination relating to race, class and motherhood, to generational clashes and sexual harassment. The 100-plus episode archive is an honest look at ‘the things we think about, but don’t always talk about’, and each and every one feels necessary.
One Girl Band
If you’ve ever dreamed of quitting the rat race and starting your own creative business, this empowering and supportive podcast should be an essential companion. As well as providing practical advice about how to market your business, set realistic goals and make the most of your working week, host Lola Hoad also looks at the importance of self-care and provides strategies for dealing with the difficult times, from periods of low confidence to what to do when you’re feeling stuck.
How I Built This
Behind the world’s best known companies there are some fascinating stories, and, in this NPR podcast, host Guy Raz chats to the well-known founders of companies like Kate Spade, Buzzfeed and Starbucks to get the inside scoop. One of the best recent episodes was Raz’s interview with Whitney Wolfe - the entrepreneur who helped launched Tinder when she was 22, then went on to become the founder of Bumble. Wolfe’s story reminds us that the path to success is rarely plain sailing – she’s admirably honest about her struggles working in a male-dominated workplace, and the toll that took on her mental health.
Prosperity Kitchen
Business coach Gemma McCrae’s podcast takes a holistic look at how we can optimise both our working lives and personal lives, and explains why it’s important to give equal attention to both in order to truly thrive. With episodes on everything from crafting the perfect CV, employee rights and productivity hacks, to those which tackle getting more sleep, finding time for exercise and the benefits of mindfulness, this is a podcast that will help you perform at your best while you’re at work, and truly switch off when you’re not.
