Can the new crop of vegetable-infused cocktails really help us get our five-a-day at happy hour?

From celeriac to pea shoots, mixologists are raiding the vegetable patch to create the latest blend of cocktails – but are they any good for you?

Sir Nigel’s Sour at 45 Jermyn St

In the mix: Beetroot juice is blended with marmalade vodka, lemon juice, rosemary syrup, orange bitters and egg white to create a strong, sour cocktail with a brilliant red hue.
Five-a-day? Nutrition expert Alice Mackintosh says that this just counts as one portion. Pour us another…
£9.50; 45 Jermyn Street, London SW1; 45jermynst.com

Diamond Daisy at Dandelyan

In the mix: Cavolo nero juice is added to Bacardi Carta Blanca, yellow chartreuse, riesling, lime juice and sugar syrup then sprinkled with kale ash for a light twist on a daiquiri.
Five-a-day? None. Cavolo nero is nutrient dense, but the few stalks here don’t equal a portion.
£12.50; Dandelyan, Upper Ground, London SE1; mondrianlondon.com

Celeriac and bee pollen bellini at Duck & Waffle

In the mix: Celeriac is juiced and filtered then mixed with a house-made bee pollen liqueur and topped with prosecco to create a savoury twist on a classic peach bellini.
Five-a-day? One. But make sure to get your fibre elsewhere as it is removed in juicing.
£14; Bishopsgate, London EC2N; duckandwaffle.com

What’s Up Doc? at The Botanist

In the mix: Carrot juice is shaken with gin, lemon juice and Aperol, then garnished with micro celery herbs and a baby carrot for the perfect balance of sweet, savoury and bitter flavours.
Five-a-day? One. Bugs Bunny would be very pleased.
£8; Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and more; thebotanist.uk.com

Pea shoots sour at Grain Store

In the mix: Pea shoots are blended with sugar syrup, then shaken with gin, lemon juice, egg white, vermouth and absinthe for a refreshing aperitif.
Five-a-day? One. As a bonus, pea shoots are rich in folic acid and have seven times as much vitamin C as blueberries.
£8.50; Granary Square, London N1C; grainstore.com

Lewisham at Peg + Patriot

In the mix: Okra is pickled, then added to rum, distilled naga chilli, Kamm & Sons Islay Cask and a splash of grapefruit oil in a fruity yet sour mix.
Five-a-day? None. Pickling vegetables can concentrate goodness but, alas, the okra alone is not enough to count.
£9; Patriot Square, London E2; townhallhotel.com
