Opening in Hackney this month, Temple of Seitan is hoping to fill the takeaway void for all those who prefer going meat-free.

Yes, chicken shop delights, from tubs of crispy fried popcorn bites to sandwiches, burgers and ‘chicken’ topped mac ‘n’ cheese, can finally all be yours, with none of the meat eater’s guilt.

But how on earth can they do this? Since chicken is, after all, chicken?

Cue the magical food stuff that is seitan.

Derived from the protein contained in wheat gluten, seitan is also known as ‘wheat meat’, and has long been a staple among veggie monks.

“Seitan itself originates from China and has been a meat substitute for over 1000 years,” explains Rebecca McGuinness, from Temple of Seitan.

“It can be made with gluten flour, water and seasonings that best emulate the flavours of the meat you are trying to replicate. We make all of our own seitan from scratch.”

To get that finger licking chicken taste, Temple of Seitan flavour their wheat meat with sage, salt and vegan broths, before frying it all up nice and crispy.

Having been regulars on the pop-up foodie scene for some time now, you may have spotted them on Brick Lane or at vegan markets, the folks at Temple of Seitan are finally planning to lay down roots.

Opening on Saturday 14 January, ‘Temple of Hackney’ is set to bring its fried goodness to Morning Lane, and we’re very excited indeed.

Double confirming the news via blog FatGayVegan.com, McGuinness says: “In January 2017, we’ll be opening London’s (and maybe the world’s!) first 100% vegan chicken shop.

“We’re looking forward to providing a vegan alternative for Londoners craving a bit of takeaway.”

Bring on the not-chicken.
