Gelato Gusto, Brighton

This quirky artisan parlour in the UK's favourite seaside town boasts unusual flavours of ice cream including smokey bacon waffle and pear and parmesan sorbet, as well as the gelato burger, a brioche filled with ice cream that makes a modern take on the baked Alaska.

Fouberts, Chiswick/Kensington, London

This family-run Italian gelataria has been around since 1978 and become an institution in its Chiswick location, as well as having a second branch on Kensington High Street. Amongst numerous classic flavours available are the wonderful orange sorbet and a nutty green pistachio.

Founded in 2010, this bright parlour boasts over 150 flavours of hand made ice cream, sorbet and frozen yoghurt - including bubble gum and jelly bean - and its central location in York's ancient, winding streets gives it a touch of old-fashioned charm, despite its very 21st century decor.

Henley Ice Cream, Henley

This 16th century building in quaint Henley-on-Thames became a dairy in the early 20th century. Its owners began experimenting with turning left over milk into cream, and eventually ice cream. The rest, they say, is history. Despite having changed hands several times, the ice cream parlour is one of the top attractions in Henley.

Ice cream has always been cold, but at Gelupo, it's cool too. Jacob Kenedy creates inconceivable flavours in the Central London kitchen, using ingredients as varied as ricotta, saffron and even black pepper - we know - but with surprisingly delicious results.

Ciccarelli, Blyth

The seaside and ice cream are a pairing not to be messed with, so Ciccarelli's, in Blyth, Northumberland has struck gold with its coastline setting. Founded by Elena Ciccarelli when she moved from Italy in 1959, the business has gone from strength to strength, and today is run by her loving sons and family, so you can expect a warm welcome.

The Ice Cream Farm, Cheshire

If your love of ice cream is childish to the point where you end up with a messy face every time you eat the stuff - or you're just looking after some actual children - this is the place to go. The Ice Cream Farm in Cheshire has a whole host of outdoor activities and farm animals to visit, as well as a cafe, and of course a heck of a lot of ice cream.

Nardini's, near Glasgow

Scotland isn't well-known for its warm weather, so it may be a little bit of a surprise to find this Italian-run cafe, bakery and ice cream parlour at the seaside town of Largs, just west of Glasgow. But its setting doesn't make it any less charming, or the ice cream any less tasty. It's a Scottish institution, just visit and you'll see why.

Fortnum and Mason's, Piccadilly, London

London's most deluxe foodie destination also boasts a retro-style ice cream parlour, filled with posh ice cream - what else? It's also where the Knickerbocker Glory was invented in 1955 - so if you like your dessert oldschool, you know where to go. The kitsch decorations and over the top sundaes make it a must-try it for an alternative to an afternoon tea.

Morelli's, Kent

Italian families generally have a high level success rate making ice cream over here - we can't think why. Guiseppe Morelli began selling the cold stuff from the back of his bicycle in when he arrived in the UK in 1907. The business eventually grew into a parlour - Morelli's - with a concession in Harrods and others around the world, but its original home in Broadstairs is worth a visit.
