It’s possibly the biggest pronunciation dispute of all time, the age old debate: how to correctly pronounce the name of those dry little Cornish delights.
Is it scone as in 'gone'? Or is it the rather posh sc-oh-ne as in 'bone'?
With the aim of finally putting an end to the arguments and the family rivalries that have centrered around the pronunciation of scones, YouGov decided to poll the nation – and they have revealed that the divide is about as tight as Brexit.
51% pronounce it scone as in ‘gone’, while only 41% opt for scone as in ‘bone’.
Naturally, there appeared to be a class and region divide with the pronunciation, with Northerners and Scots overwhelmingly voting for ‘gone’, while Southerners and those in the Midlands opted for ‘bone’.
Interestingly, though, despite the posh-sounding nature of the ‘bone’ option, the pronunciations were equally divided between the C2DE social grade, and the ABC1 group more likely to opt for ‘gone’ – with 55% voting that way.
The added divide of the scone debate- whether or not to start with jam or cream when dressing the little delights up to eat – was polled.
Curiously, the option to put jam on first came out on top, with 61% of people voting this way, rather than the ‘Devon style’ of putting cream on first.
Well well well, seems like that settles it.
Either way, we’ll be having a cream tea this afternoon…
