Famed for its mythical ability to cure a hangover, the Bloody Mary is one of the most popular cocktails around today.
Invented in Harry's New York Bar in Paris in 1920, it comes with a kick but debate rages over how exactly it should be made. Is cayenne pepper a nice touch? And what about the role of horseradish, clam juice or soy sauce?
Here, mixologist JJ Goodman of The London Cocktail Club shares his recipe for the ultimate Bloody Mary, to tie in with the release of True Blood Season 4 on Blu-Ray and DVD today (Monday 21 May).
So vampire and cocktail fans alike, get your teeth into THE perfect Bloody Mary mix-up, as below...
Ingredients
- Vodka (25/35ml)
- Schweppes tomato juice (100ml for weight & taste)
- Tabasco hot sauce (small splash, about 4ml)
- Worcester sauce (use a lot)
- Malden sea salt
- Cracked black pepper
- Half a lemon
- Stick of celery
Method
- Mix the vodka with the Worcester sauce – five large dashes to start with
- Add the Tabasco, salt, pepper and tomato juice
- Squeeze the lemon in
- Add to full shaker of ice, then roll the shaker (rather than shaking it top to bottom) to ensure the least dilution
- Serve in a tall, ice-filled glass and add a stick of celery and slice of lemon to garnish
- Finish with black pepper on the top
