Marks & Spencer’s beloved Colin the Caterpillar has, for as long as we can remember, always looked the same. All we have to do is close our eyes and we can picture his chocolatey white boots, guileless smile and brightly-coloured candy decorations perfectly.

However, things have changed this year: first, we learned that Colin had been given a seriously spooky makeover (or should that be cakeover?) for Halloween – and now M&S has unveiled an extra-special festive twist on their classic birthday/office leaving-do cake.

To celebrate the most wonderful time of the year, the world’s most famous edible caterpillar has donned a chocolate Santa hat.

And, for an extra Christmassy twist, he’s shaken off his sugar-coated chocolate buttons in favour of some tasty holly-leaf decorations.

There’s just one catch: rather than being one full-sized caterpillar, Colin will come as six miniature versions in a pack (£2).

Mini caterpillars do not a Colin cake make, in our opinion. But, on the plus side, this does mean that there will be plenty for everyone to go around – and it’s sure to put an end to that certain someone cutting off an unfairly sized slab and making off with half the cake at the next office do.

According to Good Housekeeping, Christmas Colin won’t be available in stores until sometime in October, which is apparently when Christmas begins in the UK (don’t tell anyone we were excited about gin baubles in August).

In the meantime, Halloween Colin has already made his debut in M&S stores all over the country, so we can focus on all things spooky in the meantime.
