Chocolate hummus exists, and we don’t know how to feel

Hummus is, without a doubt, the king of lunchtime snacks. Whether you prefer yours dolloped on salad, spread over a pitta bread, or carefully scooped up with a carrot baton, there’s no denying that the chickpea-based mixture is seriously versatile – and it can transform even the most basic sandwich into something seriously gourmet.

The only thing it can’t do, of course, is get involved with sweets and desserts; there’s probably nothing worse than accidentally smearing a bit of hummus on your blueberry muffin.

Until now, that is.

For better or for worse, foodies have decided to introduce chocolate hummus to the world.

Check it out:

Mixing chickpeas, melted chocolate and a pinch of salt, the finished result is something that tastes like “pure magic”, according to Spoon University – and they suggest dipping fruit slices into it for a truly decadent lunchtime treat.

We imagine it’ll suit the tastebuds of all those people who enjoy a dash of something savoury with their sweet; think salted caramel, or peanut butter ‘n’ jam, or sweet ‘n’ salted popcorn.

Then again, it could also taste exactly like what it looks like – chocolatey hummus. Although given it doesn’t use the garlic and tahini of usual hummus, one would hope not.

It’s safe to say that reactions on social media have been somewhat mixed.

One incensed Facebook fan wrote: “THIS IS NOT HUMMUS! IT'S CHICKPEAS WITH CHOCOLATE!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU???”

“Normally I would be all for adding chocolate to things,” wrote another, “but this is unholy.”

Some, however, were filled with a sense of nervous anticipation.

“I love hummus and I love chocolate,” wrote one. “I’m trying it.”

And another – clearly a woman after our own hearts – pointed out that it would probably go very well with a flute of bubbles. Because, y’know, all things do.

“Can we please have prosecco and chocolate hummus for brunch on Saturday?” she asked.

On the whole, though, people were mostly confused.

“I don't know how I feel about this,” wrote one. “It's kinda blasphemous, but I've had chocolate covered chickpeas, and they were good…?”

Another added: “Not sure how I feel about this one. I'm excited, outraged, amused, and skeptical all at once.”

That pretty much sums up our feelings on the matter perfectly. If you’ll excuse us, we’re off to go and stare at our blender for a full hour whilst contemplating the meaning of life.
