Form an orderly queue: cheese advent calendars are now a thing

As well as being widely confirmed as the worst year of all time, 2016 will also be remembered as the year that your bog-standard Christmas fare officially became Not Good Enough.

It might not even be December yet, but we’ve already seen plenty of Christmassy traditions being given a sparkly new twist – from prosecco mince pies to advent calendars filled with wine, make-up and gin.

But if you don’t fancy opening the door to chocolate, a new lipstick or a tiny bottle of booze every morning, a new advent calendar might just appeal.

Annem Hobson, who runs the food blog So Wrong It’s Nom, has created a cheese advent calendar. That’s right: you could be sampling a new kind of cheese every morning before work, aka living the dream. (Maybe don’t leave it until before bed, though – that could be the stuff of nightmares.)

Incredibly, given that cheese makes up such a big part of most people’s Christmases, nobody has thought to make a fromage-filled advent calendar before, meaning that Hobson’s is the first of its kind.

“You think this would be something that retailers had sold many times before,” she wrote on her blog. “Something the likes of Babybel or Laughing Cow had jumped on for a Christmassy marketing gimmick – but no.

“I searched high and low to no avail. Upon Googling it, I did however come across lots of people asking the same question I had. Why?”

Being an enterprising sort, Hobson took matters into her own hands, and devised the cheesy calendar we’ve all been waiting for. Unfortunately, it won’t be available to buy this December, but Hobson is hoping to spark enough interest this holiday season to make it a reality in time for Christmas 2017.

If you’d like to register your enthusiastic approval, you can head over to cheeseadventcalendar.com to put your name down and receive an update when Hobson’s creation goes on a general sale.

But if the prospect of waiting for over a year is too much to bear, you can also make your own cheese advent calendar using Hobson’s DIY tutorial here.
