Can’t wait until The Great Gatsby film comes out in December? Why not fill your time playing The Great Gatsby computer game instead.

Surely one of the most fun things we’ve come across this year, The Great Gatsby computer game is a brilliantly retro Nintendo game, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, which has been reproduced online by a group of American developers. Recently purchased by one of the group for 50 cents in a yard sale, it seems The Great Gatsby game was released around 1990, and made for the old-school Nintendo Entertainment System or NES.

Players take the guise of protagonist Nick Carraway, with the aim of the game being a search to find the elusive Gatsby while avoiding “wacky waiters, dizzy drinkers and crazy dancers”, according to the game manual.

The graphics and controls are totally retro too – use arrow keys to move around and the space bar to jump up to collect gold coins, cocktail glasses and other trinkets – and the music is something else entirely! However, literary levels are kept high with a mysterious figure giving quotes from the book alongside cryptic clues to Gatsby’s whereabouts.

With only four levels to play and just basic skills needed, you'll be hooked before you know it. Play The Great Gatsby for NES computer game online at greatgatsbygame.com
