Netflix has given us some seriously incredible shows over the years, but nothing captured our imaginations quite as much as 80s sci-fi drama Stranger Things. So it makes sense that the entertainment giants have decided to pursue the genre in a brand-new show…

In a crowd-pleasing move that many have likened to Beyoncé’s shock album drops, Netflix released a surprise trailer for The OA this week. And, whereas we’d usually have to wait months for it to hit our telly-boxes, the episodes will be ready for you to devour as of Friday 16 December.

Dubbed as a “powerful, mind-bending tale about identity, human connection and the borders between life and death”, the show will explore the supernatural – and ask its audience to trust the unknown.

So here’s what we know about the The OA so far…

Twenty years before the events of the eerie show unfold, a young blind woman disappeared without a trace. Now she has mysteriously returned home… and she can see again.

“I didn’t disappear… I was present for all of it,” she tells us in the trailer – before going on to hint that there are some incredibly strange and unnatural forces at work.

She says: “The biggest mistake I made was believing that if I cast a beautiful net, I’d capture only beautiful things.

“I remember. I remember… everything.”

She may remember everything, but we know next to nothing – and it seems as if that’s exactly the way the show’s creators want it.

Shortly before dropping the trailer, Netflix tweeted out three questions: “Have you seen death?”, “Have you seen darkness?”, and “Have you seen the light?”

Those tweets were followed by with a couple of short clips featuring a young, distressed woman running across a bridge.

How very philosophical… we guess they want us to go in with our minds open.

One thing’s fur sure, the series has some serious clout behind it; all eight episodes come from Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, the creative team behind 2013’s extraordinarily successful film The East.

It stars Marling alongside Ian Alexander, Will Brill, Emory Cohen and Patrick Gibson.
