In need of a little light escapism? Try watching one of these fun and frothy romantic comedy films on Netflix, from seasoned classics to new contenders.
Sometimes, it feels as though there are simply too many films and TV shows to choose between, which means that – if you’re anything like us – you end up scrolling mindlessly through the menu for hours on end. The decision paralysis gets particularly intense if your mind is running at 100mph and you just aren’t in the mood for another gritty true crime documentary or meaty drama.
How do you sift through all of the delightful romcoms on offer to find the romantic movie (specifically a romantic comedy) of your dreams?
Thankfully, there’s help at hand. We’ve hand-picked a list of our top Netflix romcoms for you to add to your must-watch list. We’re talking seriously warm and fuzzy vibes, and plot lines to spark next-level joy.
Irish Wish
Always a bridesmaid, never a bride? Maddie (Lindsay Lohan) knows exactly what this feels like when her best friend gets engaged to the love of her life. Set in Ireland, the film sees Maddie attending her best friend’s wedding, where she’s a bridesmaid. However, ahead of the wedding, Maddie makes a wish to find true love and wakes up as the bride-to-be. But is this her happily ever after?
Love In The Villa
An unexpected holiday romance? Sign us up. Julie’s dream trip to Verona, Italy, turns star-crossed when she discovers her rented villa is already occupied by an annoyingly attractive stranger.
The Proposal
A personal favourite that’s a regular feature on my watch list is The Proposal. When an overbearing book editor (Sandra Bullock) learns she’s in danger of losing her US visa status and may be deported, she forces her put-upon assistant (Ryan Reynolds) to marry her.
Players
A New York sports writer with a playbook of clever hook up lines and schemes unexpectedly falls for a fling. But can she go from playing the field to playing for keeps?
Crazy Stupid Love
A real classic of the genre: Crazy Stupid Love follows the love stories of a series of individuals connected in different ways (including some surprises). Most importantly? Fans are treated to some truly brilliant one-liners from Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell.
Love At First Sight
Hadley and Oliver (played by Haley Lu Richardson and Ben Hardy) form a connection on a flight to London, only to be separated by a twist of fate. A reunion seems near-impossible — but love has a way of defying all odds. Especially when it’s being narrated by Jameela Jamil.
The Royal Treatment
Straight-talking New York hairdresser Izzy lands the gig of a lifetime with an invitation to style a royal wedding. The only hitch is, Prince Thomas is getting wed for duty, not love. And when sparks fly between the pair (you know how amorous hairdressing can get), the heir must decide – does he go with his head or his heart?
Love Wedding Repeat
This captivating comedy has a hint of Sliding Doors about it. Alternate versions of the same wedding unfold as Jack battles a never-ending string of disasters – from angry ex-girlfriends to misplaced medication – to ensure his little sister Dina (Olivia Munn) gets the nuptials of her dreams. This ill-fated mission sees Jack cross paths with an old flame of his own: but will she remain The One Who Got Away?
Holidate
Fed up with being harassed by their families over their single status, two impossibly attractive strangers (Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey) agree to be each other’s platonic plus-ones all year long. In true Hollywood fashion, though, it isn’t long before they catch real feelings along the way…
To All The Boys trilogy
When her secret love letters somehow get mailed to each of her five crushes, Lara Jean finds her quiet high school existence turned upside down. And, for those who fall in love with this story about… well, about love, the sugary-sweet sequels are on Netflix, too.
Nappily Ever After
In this big-hearted romcom, a soulful barber helps a woman piece her life back together after an accident at her hair salon makes her realise she is not living life to the fullest.
The Kissing Booth
Based on the book of the same name, this popular Netflix Original (which is now a trilogy) sees a high school student find herself face-to-face with her long-term crush when she signs up to run a kissing booth at the spring carnival.
Love, Guaranteed
This frothy romcom follows hardworking lawyer Susan (Rachael Leigh Cook) who, in a bid to save her small law firm, takes on a high-profile case from Nick (Damon Wayans Jr), a charming new client wanting to sue a dating website that promises love to those who use it.
“But as the case heats up, so do Susan and Nick’s feelings for each other,” Netflix teases. Classic.
Someone Great
Someone Great follows music journalist Jenny as she get unexpectedly dumped by her boyfriend of nine years. With a new job and a new start lined up in San Francisco, it’s up to her two best friends to take her out on one last outrageous NYC adventure.
Always Be My Maybe
When childhood sweethearts Sasha and Marcus have a falling out as teens, they don’t speak for 15 years. When their paths cross in San Francisco, it quickly becomes apparent that they still have feelings for one another. Too bad, then, that they now inhabit entirely different worlds.
Set It Up
In this smart and furiously funny Netflix Original, two overworked and underpaid assistants come up with a plan to get their bosses off their backs by setting them up with one another. Guess what happens next?
The Half Of It
In this twist on a classic rom-com formula, a shy, introverted student helps the school jock woo a girl whom, secretly, they both want.
The Incredible Jessica James
This uplifting romance follows aspiring NYC playwright Jessica as she does her best to fix her broken heart. How? By bonding with Brooke, a man who has also been spectacularly dumped.
The Lovebirds
On the brink of breaking up, a couple gets unintentionally embroiled in a bizarre murder mystery. As they get closer to clearing their names and solving the case, they need to figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.
