"We are now and will forever be united” Muslim students in France create poignant video in response to Paris attack
10 years ago
In response to the tragic terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday night, a group of Muslim students in France have created a powerful video that is being viewed and shared over and over again online.
Shortly after the massacre, the so-called Islamic State group ISIS claimed responsibility for both the shootings and suicide bombing across the city, which at this moment have claimed 129 lives and left many more seriously injured.
In the two minute clip, students from The Etudiants Musulmans de France (EMF) – a French student organisation representing thousands of people of the Muslim faith – gather to express their sadness and shock alongside the rest of the world after fatalities in the French capital.
Following the increased Islamophobic backlash since the attack, at the heart of this video is the message that the beliefs in which the terrorists acted under is not the ones shared by Islamic faith at large, and of course the students themselves. They stand united with France and the rest of the world in the battle against extremists of any faith.
The video begins with a clip of French president François Hollande’s statement and the news coverage of the attack, before going on to say this powerful message:
“Following the attacks, EMF expresses emotion. We have suffered perhaps 120 deaths, with perhaps 100s on injuries. We are immersed in three days of warning, because of eight terrorists.
“France is deep into chaos. And I am speechless. They think they are fighting Crusaders, and they evoke the Qur’an and quote its verses. But shedding the blood of an innocent has no justification… not in Islam or anywhere.
“If they don’t understand it, I don’t understand them.”
At this point, many of the students hold up a sign reading ‘#NousSommesUnis’ (We Are United).
It continues:
“Will me heart be given enough time to heal? Between Charlie Hedbo, the Thayls and submerged Paris? ‘My France is hurting’ shouts my heart loudly, and my heart chooses the path of faith. My faith from which foundations are shaken, because of 120 deaths and millions of broken hearts.
“By these cowardly acts of terrorists convinced of the soundness of their choice, but soundness of faith will always condemn such attacks. They wanted France to be weak, they made our French hearts strong. One cry will be louder, it is the cry of fraternity. A cry that says: ‘One for all and all for one humanity.’
“We are now and will forever be united.”
The video closed with a quote from the Qur’an that has been repeatedly shared across social media over the last few days, which reads:
‘Whosoever takes one life, it is as though he has killed all of humanity.”
Published on the 15 November, the clip has already had over 380,000 views.
