Just when Gilmore Girls fans had recovered from the excitement that was our favourite mother-daughter duo returning last year, we now have to deal with the glimmer of hope that they might be back again soon.
Lauren Graham, who plays Lorelai Gilmore, let slip in a podcast interview that she would love to see the show brought back. But not as a TV series, oh no: as a bonafide festive film.
She suggested: “To me, what would be a great next step – whenever it is, five years, ten years – would be a Christmas movie.”
The 50-year-old star also reflected on the “high” she felt during her “perfect” return to Stars Hollow last year.
“It’s very difficult,” she said, even “to communicate how special an experience that was.”
The Gilmore Girls returned to Netflix last year after a nearly decade long hiatus, to a positive reception from fans.
It had originally ran from 2000-2007, following coffee addicted single mother Lorelai and her precocious and intelligent teenage daughter Rory as they navigated life in a small idyllic town in New England.
But after leaving a hole in its legions of fans’ lives, streaming giant Netflix resurrected it last year to catch up on where life had taken Rory and Lorelai since the mid-noughties.
The revival showed that things hadn’t all been peachy in the ensuing nine years, with Rory a struggling journalist with a complicated love life and her mother Lorelai as neurotic and scatty as ever.
Utilising a “year in the life” formula, the mini-series had just four episodes in total – one for each season.
And, as fans will know, things were not wrapped up in a neat bow at the end of that run, leaving plenty of room for a further return.
There has apparently been a lot of discussion as to whether the show should return again or go out on a high and another instalment is far from set in stone.
However Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, did say that they are in some “very preliminary talks” with the show’s creators.
In the meantime, Alexis Bledel, who shot to fame playing the then teenage Rory, has signed on as a series regular for season two of the The Handmaids Tale after blowing us away with her guest performance in the first.
But here’s hoping she might be able to take time out of her schedule for something less bleak, like a Gilmore Girls Christmas film..
