A little-known conflict in Uganda has captured the world's attention thanks to a moving video about a former child soldier that has gone viral on Twitter and Facebook.

KONY 2012 was created by Invisible Children, a campaign group that aims to raised awareness of Ugandan military group the Lord's Resistance Army, under the leadership of Joseph Kony.

They are seeking to raise support for the arrest of Kony, an international fugitive who is wanted for 33 separate criminal charges, including 12 counts of crimes against humanity.

The film tells the harrowing story of the Ugandan war through the eyes of former child soldier Jacob, whose brother has died and who himself believes he would be better off dead.

It has taken social media by storm in the past few days, with the hashtags #kony2012 and #stopkony trending on Twitter.

Juliette Lewis, Zooey Deschanel, Stephen Fry and Rihanna are just some of the celebrities to have supported the campaign. Invisible Children's website initially crashed under the surge of traffic that interest in the video generated.

The Lord's Resistance Army is estimated to have abducted over 66,000 children and forced them to become child soldiers, as part of a campaign of terror that has lasted for decades in parts of Africa.

The UN refugee agency UNHCR said the group was behind a recent spate of attacks in the Democratic Republic of Congo, leaving 3,000 people displaced this year alone.
