“I would seek help if Charlotte or George had mental health problems.” Kate Middleton pens her first article
9 years ago
In her first ever written article, Kate Middleton has made a call to end the stigma that surrounds mental health problems among children.
She has also said that she will encourage her children, Prince George, two, and Princess Charlotte, 10 months, to speak openly about their feelings.
From a pop-up “newsroom” inside Kensington Palace, the mother-of-two is guest-editing The Huffington Post UK this week to coincide with the launch of Young Minds Matter, an initiative to raise awareness of mental health among toddlers and older children, which she's backing.
“Shortly after I got married, I started working with charities helping those affected by issues such as addiction, family breakdown and vulnerable children.”
The 34-year-old goes on to explain that she didn’t expect those issues "to almost always stem from unresolved childhood challenges".
New research shows that around a third of parents still worry that they will look like a bad mother or father if their child has a mental health problem.
"Parenting is hard enough," says The Duchess, "without letting prejudices stop us from asking for the help we need for ourselves and our children."
“Like most parents today, William and I would not hesitate to seek help for our children if they needed it. We hope to encourage George and Charlotte to speak about their feelings, and to give them the tools and sensitivity to be supportive peers to their friends as they get older. We know there is no shame in a young child struggling with their emotions or suffering from a mental illness.”
Middleton’s article is the first in a series of articles that she has commissioned to continue the discussion on mental health in childhood. Other writers include Michelle Obama and Arianna Huffington.
