TV network Lifetime has released the first trailer for much-anticipated upcoming film Who Killed JonBenét?

The film covers the real-life murder of the six-year-old beauty queen, whose body was found in the basement of her Colorado home in 1996, the day after Christmas.

And, as the trailer, which can be watched below, reveals, Who Killed JonBenét? will seemingly (and somewhat morbidly) be narrated by an omniscient representation of the young victim.

The trailer sets the scene with snow falling gently to the ground, while a chorus of children sing Silent Night in the background, the camera follows JonBenét (played by Payton Lepinski) as she runs up the stairs.

“I was Little Miss Colorado,” she intones.

“This Christmas I would be 26 – but to everyone I’ll always be six.”

Once Upon A Time’s Eion Bailey will play an investigator, while Mr Robot’s Michel Gill and Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion star Julia Campbell play John and Patsy Ramsey.

JonBenét’s brother, Burke, will be played by Kiefer O’Reilly, nine, who has a number of Lifetime films under his belt already.

His acting experience will come in handy, as his character takes centre stage for much of the movie, showing Burke accused and interrogated by police over his sister’s death.

This mirrors real-life events; the little boy, along with his mother and father, were lead suspects in the case, but in 2008 they were cleared via a DNA sample taken from JonBenét’s clothing.

Her mother had died of cancer two years before, and prosecutors said at the time they were "deeply sorry" for putting the family under a cloud of suspicion for more than a decade.

The new trailer comes shortly after CBS aired an eight-part documentary series, The Case of JonBenét Ramsey, which saw a team of detectives come together to examine the clues surrounding the murder.  

They used new technology to comb through the evidence, dissecting a lengthy three-page ransom note to reveal that it had been written on stationery and a pen from the Ramsey home.

They also used noise reduction technology to analyse the original 911 call, which had been placed by Patsy to report that her daughter had been kidnapped.

Investigators claimed that they could identify three voices from the call after she thought she’d hung up the phone, which they suggested belonged to the girl’s parents and brother.

The show put forward the theory that he had accidentally killed his sister during a squabble – something which the now 29-year-old vehemently denies.

His lawyer Lin Wood – who is now suing the American TV channel which made the show – told The Sun on Sunday: “Burke Ramsey doesn’t have anything to prove.

“If the Boulder Police Department called me and said we’d like to talk to Burke and have a lie detector test done, yeah I’m happy to consider it.

“But that’s never going to happen because the Boulder Police and the Boulder District Attorney’s Office have recognised that Burke Ramsey is not even a possible suspect.

“Anyone who thinks there is a basis for Burke Ramsey to take a lie detector test because of an accusation on a TV show is an idiot.”

He added: “In my view the TV show perpetrated a fraud on the viewing public.”
