The family of a bride-to-be whose fiancé called off their nuptials at the last minute put a positive spin on heartbreak by serving their slap-up wedding meal to homeless people.

Californian Quinn Duane, 27, was set to marry Landon Borup earlier this month in Sacramento, but just five days before the ceremony the groom announced that he couldn't go through with it.

With much of the $35,000 (£22,000) costs for the big day already paid for, Quinn's mother Kari, 53, had the idea to turn the couple's reception at the city's swanky Citizen Hotel into a feast for the less fortunate.

"When I found out on Monday that the wedding would not be taking place, it just seemed like, of course, this would be something that we would do to give back," Kari tells KCRA. "I feel a lot of heartache and heartbreak for her, but I will take away something good from this, I will."

One of the recipients of the four-star feast, Erika Craycraft, who dined with her husband and five children says: "To lose out on something so important to yourself and then give it to someone else is really giving, really kind."

Flowers that had been ordered as decorations were donated to local nursing homes and while Quinn was too upset to attend what would have been her wedding reception, she is currently enjoying her non-refundable honeymoon trip to Belize with her mother.
