Jameela Jamil and Jonathan Van Ness just wore the same dress, and the internet can’t cope
6 years ago
Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness just wore the same dress as Stylist’s former guest editor Jameela Jamil, turning a “fashion faux-pas” into a celebratory moment.
At a time when we seriously need some light-hearted respite from a world of Brexit and Boris Johnson, Jonathan Van Ness and Jameela Jamil have delivered the goods.
The Queer Eye star and The Good Place actor set Twitter alight for all the right reasons on Monday (16 September).
Wearing the same dress on the red carpet as a fellow celebrity has traditionally been considered a “faux pas”, but the pair have proved that it’s actually a case of “great minds think alike”.
Van Ness wore a fuchsia Rochas gown at the Netflix Creative Arts Emmy After Party on Sunday night (15 September). It was the very same design that Jamil wore earlier this month at the YSL Beauty’s Libre launch.
And they both absolutely rocked it.
Jamil shared her joy over the twinning moment on Twitter, writing: “YOU DON’T NEED TO SAY IT! I KNOW @jvn WORE IT BEST BENCHES!”
It was the perfect way of shutting down any “who wore it better” headlines that have traditionally shamed people for daring to wear the same outfit as another celebrity.
Van Ness then re-tweeted the side-by-side photos of them wearing the same gown, captioning it: “Omggg queen great minds tho. And the pocket game was next level.”
It was almost as exciting as his reaction to meeting Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner at the VMAs last month. A viral video showed Van Ness shouting, “I love you so much,” after giving Turner a big hug.
“So happy for your ending. Oh my god, I was so relieved, I was so happy” he continued, in reference to Turner’s character Sansa Stark’s storyline in the Game of Thrones finale.
The Queer Eye presenter has had to deal with online trolling about his red carpet outfits in the past. Clad in a black organza cape by Atelier By Fang and a pair of classic Prada heels, he made the best entrance at last month’s VMAs. But he also faced some vicious trolling on social media from those criticising the outfit.
He later tweeted: “The VMAs were so major for me. I’ve gotten caught up in reading some really judgemental mean stuff about me. Some people hated my outfit, some hate me, they think I’m fake, irritating, too loud, too femme. But really I have to stay focused.”
He continued: “When I was young I wasn’t seeing people like me on the VMAs presenting awards to one of the biggest pop stars around. I’m doing work that I’m passionate about and I do it authentically. Reminding myself that this moment is beautiful for me and proud femme non binary people.”
But fans are already obsessed with the peas in a Rocha pod moment, making it very clear that we have no time for any negativity, including the outdated “who wore it best?” question.
Van Ness’ red carpet game has been pretty strong recently. He joined his Queer Eye co-stars at the Creative Arts Emmy Award 2019 last weekend, wearing a custom black and Christian Siriano (who also designed Pose star Billy Porter’s statement tux-gown at this year’s Oscars).
Sharing a photo of the look on Instagram, he wrote: “Put a bow on that ass.” (Which is exactly what he did.)

We can’t wait to see what he wears next. And Jamil might be keeping an eye out for some inspiration, too.
