Brooke’s advice echoes what I’ve learned from therapy: observing patterns within yourself is the first step towards making changes. So I’ve taken her advice, and since then I’ve graduated to the next step: keeping my mouth shut.

Despite being a devoted yapper, I’ve started asking myself if a conversation really needs my voice and, importantly, if I’m involving myself in a conversation because I think I need to say something or because I want people to see me saying something. It’s all a matter of baby steps, but I’ve been unfollowing people online who frustrate me, rather than leaving a comment ‘calling them out’. I’ve been donating money to charitable causes without needing to mention it online or direct other people to do the same. And I’ve been doing activism without posting a picture of it afterwards. I’m currently trying to do a nice thing every day for someone else without mentioning it to other people (though there is a grand irony in my writing that here). Most of all, I’m trying to focus my moralising inwards, rather than on anyone else. There’s no point in striving to reach the moral high ground if all you do when you arrive there is take a selfie.
