Frances Ha, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach's acclaimed monochrome Manhattan comedy-drama hits UK cinema screens next week. Watch the trailer for that and the other indie flicks getting us in the mood for an arthouse summer...

Frances Ha

A likeable, middle-class twenty-something woman puzzling her way through friendships, work and romance in New York... no it's not Girls: The Movie but Frances Ha, starring mumblecore muse Greta Gerwig as the title character.

Written by Gerwig and her real-life partner Noah Baumbach, who is also the film's director, this comedy drama captures Frances (Gerwig) at an uncertain time; her dance career is flagging and more crucially, her beloved best friend and flatmate Sophie (Mickey Sumner) moves out.

Shot in black and white and with strong hints of Woody Allen's Annie Hall, the film has so far racked up an impressive 96% Rotten Tomatoes rating. "Charming" is the most commonly used adjective in reviews and we're looking forward to some seriously touching moments from this indie power couple. UK release date: July 26.

Touchy Feely

Ellen Page and Allison Janney reunited on the big screen? We're in. The Juno stars are key figures in the life of sort-of-psychic masseur Abby (Rosemarie DeWitt), who develops an inconvenient aversion to touching skin. While Abby battles to overcome her sudden malady with the help of her reiki expert boss Bronwyn (Janney), her spirituals skills appear to have been passed on to her straight-laced dentist brother Paul (Josh Pais).

To make matters worse, Abby's niece Jenny (Page) makes a play for her aunt's boyfriend (Scoot McNairy) at a time when he is being rejected by his troubled partner. UK release date: TBC.

In A World...

The inexplicably underrated Lake Bell may just get her dues with In A World. She wrote, directs and stars in the promising-looking comedy about vocal coach Carol (Bell), whose biggest competitor in the industry is her own chauvinistic father.

As suckers for star cameos, it's also good to see Eva Longoria outside of the cat food adverts and on the big screen as a Carol's client who struggles to master the Cockney accent. UK release date: September

Crystal Fairy

Full disclosure - this film's official title is Crystal Fairy and the Magic Cactus and 2012. But we're not letting that put us off, as it's directed by Sebastián Silva and stars Michael Cera and exciting new talent Gabby Hoffman.

A loudmouth with an almost single-minded preoccupation with drugs, 20-something Jamie (Cera) is blowing out in Chile with the ultimate aim of nailing a dose of psychedelic San Pedro Cactus juice. He encounters the free-spirited and enchanting Crystal Fairy (Hoffman) and invites her along for the trip. While her name screams 'drug enabler' Crystal is more self-assured, unpredictable and annoying than Jamie and his friends can handle. UK release date: TBC
