From Willy Wonka to Miss Trunchbull, the characters from our favourite Roald Dahl books are indelibly printed on our imaginations. So it was perhaps only a matter of time before someone decided to conjure up Quentin Blake's iconic illustrations in cake form.

The Cake Dahls event in Ireland this weekend saw a host of talented cake artists unite to mix up famous Dahl characters in 3D fondant-based format.

Baking and confectionary wizards put their skills to the test to create everything from a six-foot version of Willy Wonka to a cake rendering of the famous scene where Miss Trunchbull catapults a girl across the room by her hair in Matilda.

Drawing from childhood memories of beloved, colourful and terrifying protagonists from Dahl's best-selling books, the decorators sculptured an impressive line-up of edible exhibits.

The event took place on 13 September, which is Roald Dahl day, and marked the 50th anniversary of one of his most enduring and memorable tales, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Dahl first published his hit story of Charlie Bucket, the five Golden Tickets, the Oompa-Loompas and the amazing Mr Willy Wonka in 1964.

He began work on the book in 1961 but inspiration for the tale can be traced back to his own childhood, when he and his fellow classmates at Repton school in Derbyshire were taken on as "taste testers" for a nearby chocolate company.

In a new book out this month - Inside Charlie's Chocolate Factory - Stylist columnist Lucy Mangan takes a look behind the making of Dahl's best-loved book.

As a self-confessed chocolate lover, we can imagine Dahl would approve of this latest project to re-imagine his characters as cake sculptures.

And the character carvings do a great job of capturing some of the joie de vivre contained in the illustrations by Quentin Blake, whose sketches for Dahl's books have become synonymous with the author himself, and are central to the success of his stories.

"It’s wonder­ful to know my work has inspired people. A student once showed me one of Mr Dahl’s books and said, ‘That was the first book I ever read... because of the pictures’," he recalled in a recent interview with the Mirror. "She was at university reading English Literature. And a man told me, ‘My daughter could read before she went to school all thanks to you."
