Hello, cute: baby orangutans steal the show in new documentary

The list of things guaranteed to bring a smile to our face on a Monday afternoon is small and rather select.

David Beckham in his H&M underwear ad probably makes the edit. As does ice-fresh pistachio gelato with a crispy wafer on the side.

And after seeing these delightfully cute photos, we now have another happy addition to the list: baby orangutans.

These adorable fellas are making their mark in a new TV show, Orangutan Rescue: Back to the Wild, airing on the Nat Geo Wild channel tonight.

The programme is a one-off special, offering viewers privileged access to International Animal Rescue’s orangutan

rehab centre in Borneo, Indonesia.

It follows the work of a team of international vets, scientists and volunteers who are battling to rehabilitate orphaned orangutans, as they learn the skills necessary to survive in the wild.

Only 100 years ago, an estimated 600,000 orangutans roamed the Borneo and Sumatran rainforests. But now they are one of the world’s most endangered species due to poaching, habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade. Inevitably, this means a high level of orphaned infant orangutans - many of whom would die without the intervention of the rehab centre.

Preview clips from tonight's show see the infant apes being carried around en masse in a wheelbarrow (officially the sweetest mode of transport ever).

Cameras also follow the youngsters as they begin to learn to climb.

Take a look below or stay tuned for the full show, Orangutan Rescue: Back to the Wild, tonight at 8pm on Nat Geo Wild.
