Ah, summer.
Land of long hazy days, festivals, the soul-warming sounds of DJ Jazzy Jeff – and of course, gin and tonic.
Everything about this beloved beverage shouts holiday season, from the soothing tinkle of ice to slithers of lemon and mint garnishes that adorn it.
F Scott Fitzgerald had it right in The Great Gatsby, when he describes how Daisy and Jay order gin rickeys – a G&T spin-off - and “drank in long, greedy swallows”.
And now one of our all-time favourite drinks has landed itself an upgrade, in the form of a zesty popsicle.
This ingenious creation is the brainchild of supermarket chain Aldi, which has unveiled a new line of G&T ice pops just in time for summer.
The adult-only lollies are touted as “a refreshingly cool way to start your party” and are priced at £2.99 for a pack of four. Each one contains 11% gin.
Prosecco and peach Bellini-flavoured ice pops are also available in the range. But we think our money will go on the gin versions.
Aldi is clearly keen to get in on a trend that set the foodie world alight last year.
In April 2016, a factory opened in Las Vegas dedicated entirely to making alcoholic ice-creams and sorbets. The company’s CEO said at the time that he wanted to “create happiness while giving back to the greater good” (as good a mission statement as any, to our ears).
Owner Leif Pearson was inspired to start the business after he made frozen White Russians on a road trip and “everybody really loved it”.
London-based Fortnum and Mason’s – a store that supplies the Queen among other discerning clientele – has also embraced the concept of ice lolly cocktails.
It offers popsicles in Rosé Champagne, Blanc de Blancs Champagne and Kir Royale flavours, among others.
Meanwhile, Hampshire-based ice-cream company Jude’s boasts its own take on G&T ice-cream, made from Sipsmith gin.
So, you see we’re all set for another summer bursting with alcoholic popsicles.
We’re clearing out our freezers already, in hot anticipation...
