From Sandra to Gary and Elaine, the unfashionably kitsch baby names heading for extinction

For all the thousands of newborns being called Amelia and Oliver (Britain's most popular), there's a set of parents fighting for a revival of unfashionable retro names that are fast falling away from our lexicon altogether.

This week a couple named their son Gary in hopes of preserving it (in 2014, only 33 boys were given the name).

Now resurfaced data from the Office of National Statistics shows exactly which names are falling rapidly out of fashion and might need saving.

Carol and Annette were in the top 100 baby names for girls in 1964, but no parents gave their children these monikers last year.

The once popular Nigel and Barry fell to 2079th positions in 2014 and Clive and Norman fell to 2964th place.

This comes as a particular calibre of vintage names are seeing a resurgence in popularity, especially among celebrities. Lily Allen has named her daughters Ethel and Marnie, Dido has named her son Stanley and Amy Poehler called her son Archie. And actress Zooey Deschanel recently revealed that she named her first child Elsie.

But this trend for retro names of the early 20th Century has not yet extended to popular names of the Sixties and Seventies - such as Barry, Nigel and Annette - that are still widely considered out of date, and sound passé in a way that's not fashionable.

Take a look at the once-popular names that could soon fizzle out - if we don't start using them soon...
