For years, we’ve hoped against hope that the TV gods would bestow a brand-new series of Friends upon us. Even though we know it probably wouldn’t be the same and the characters have all moved on and we should really consider doing likewise, we just can’t seem to let it go.
And, for years, we’ve been left bitterly disappointed, time and time again.
But now, finally, someone out there has heard our cries for more Friends – and they’ve upped the ante in a very big way.
This, fellow fans, is Friends! The Musical.
That’s right: Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey and Ross will be there for you once again – and, this time, Phoebe won’t be the only one singing.
The stage show is set to hit the New York stage this autumn. And, despite not being directly endorsed by the official creators of the original sitcom, it’s going to be focused entirely on the Central Perk gang and their most memorable moments.
According to The Huffington Post, songs will include such hits as:
- We Were on a Break!
- How You Doing, Ladies?
- The Only Coffee Shop in New York City
- Oh. My. God. It’s Janice!
- Could I BE Any More… in Love with Monica?
- We’ll Always Be There For You
And, of course, many, many more.
The show has been penned by Bob and Tobly McSmith, who have famously parodied a number of shows in their previous off-Broadway hits. Think 90210! The Musical and Kardashians! The Musical, for starters.
So far, there’s no word on whether or not Phoebe’s hit tunes (y’know, Smelly Cat, Little Black Curly Hair, and the like) will make an appearance – or whether Ross will treat us all to a rendition of Celebration on the bagpipes. But, in spite of these glaring oversights, it sounds as if this is going to be a worthwhile trip for Friends fans everywhere.
At the moment, Friends! The Musical is only scheduled for a New York run – which makes sense, being as it’s the home of our favourite sextet. But, if you don’t mind travelling a little further afield for your Friends-based hijinks, you can book your tickets from June ahead of the show's premiere this autumn at New York's Triad Theatre.
Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait along with the rest of us and hope that the show proves successful. That’s the only way we’re going to lure them to London’s West End…
