Have you ever thought "Yup, I'll try out a yoga class" and subsequently felt intimidated by the studied calm of the other yogis in your lesson?
Well, then, you may need to try out Rage Yoga, the angry yoga class that promises to make you "zen as fuck".
There's none of the silent relaxation involved in a normal yoga class, but instead there's swearing, drinking, heavy metal music and flipping your middle finger with reckless abandon.
The new trend is defined as "a practice involving stretching, positional exercises and bad humour, with the goal of attaining good health and to become zen as fuck. More than just a practice, Rage Yoga is an attitude."
The trend was dreamt up by a Canadian woman, Lindsay Istace, whose twice-weekly Rage Yoga classes are held in a curtained-off corner of a Calgary pub.
Istace - who, naturally, is also a trained contortionist, juggler and fire eater - told CBC News she came up with the concept while going through a painful break-up and realising that combining an angry approach with her usual yoga practice helped her to feel better about the split.
"When I started going to yoga classes, I felt like I didn't really fit in at a lot of those different studios," she said. "[There's a] very deadpan, serious, overly serene approach to things. And that's just not how I roll.
"When you create a space for yourself to be angry and to shout and swear and scream, suddenly it's hard to take yourself so seriously. So it goes from anger to laughter pretty quickly. And we have a lot of that going on here."
However, Istace admitted that several more traditional yogis weren't keen about her adaptation of the age-old practice. "Some yoga teachers don't exactly like the approach," she said. "They don't really think that it's real yoga, that swearing and drinking beer makes it illegitimate. And that's fine. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. Different things work for different people and not everyone has to be on board."
Above all, she adds, Rage Yoga is about being "centered, confident and giving zero fucks". Amen.
While Rage Yoga is currently only taught in Canada *sob*, Istace has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help all of us around the world learn all about the benefits of the angry exercise online.
Somehow we don't think drinking, swearing and falling over all alone in the comfort of our own home would be quite as much fun - it might be time to buy a ticket to Calgary, pronto.
