Good news for everyone who fell in love with Fleabag – the show has officially been confirmed for a second series.

The BBC made the exciting announcement on Twitter, posting a champagne-toasting GIF accompanied by the words, “SURPRISE! #Fleabag is coming back...”

Digital Spy reports that the show’s creator, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, says the new series will be “a whole new adventure”.

“I asked myself if Fleabag has more to say and frankly she hasn't shut up since," Waller-Bridge explained. "Series two will be a whole new adventure, and I'm beyond thrilled to be coming back."

The release date is yet to be confirmed, but is said to be sometime in 2019, so we’ve got a while to wait.

The six-part first series aired on the BBC last summer and instantly struck a chord with its sharply hilarious and often dark tone, following the titular character’s life in London and her struggle to come to terms with several issues in her life, not least difficult family relations, a floundering business and recent bereavement.

Previously Waller-Bridge has said of her particular style of comedy-drama mix: “I felt that, if you could disarm an audience through the laughter then they are left wide open and vulnerable for you to squeeze their heart a bit.”

The writer, actor and comedian has also revealed what she wants to happen to Fleabag in series two, telling the Royal Television Society: “I want her to have a different kind of journey.

"The first series was about her exposing, and having to own up to her own regrets and her own darkness. And I think now that's past, it's what happens after you do that, it's the reality of it.”

There has long been excitement over further episodes after Waller-Bridge told radiotimes.com that she was hoping to shoot in November this year, aiming for a 2018 release, and took home two gongs from the Royal Television Society Awards – Breakthrough Star of the Year and Best Comedy Writer.

And she’s previously said while she’d envisaged the show as a “one-off”, another series was always possible given the story lines.

“We cracked it open so that she would be able to have a life beyond it and also there are so many more stories and story strands and character strands come out of this series,” she said.

Fleabag is an adaptation of a stage show. Following the TV success, Waller-Bridge brought it back to London's Soho Theatre for a second run.

And she told Stylist that her character’s dysfunction and sometimes unlikeable behaviour was a reflection of the impulses in most of us – and that it doesn’t stand in opposition to feminism. “I think feminism is integral to everything that I’m trying to write but I didn’t know how to articulate my own feelings.

“I wanted to explode the myth that feminism is without personality, and that women who talk about it are sanctimonious. Fleabag is me trying to inject some humour into the issue […] There’s a little Fleabag in all of us, saying and doing things we shouldn’t.”

We’re thrilled that a second series has finally been confirmed and will be keeping our eyes peeled for an official air date.
