The good news is that someone has recreated Fleabag’s coffee shop in the wild. The bad news is that you have to be in Los Angeles to visit it.
In the second season of Fleabag our heroine’s beloved guinea pig café is on the brink of bankruptcy.
Fleabag (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) has some hare-brained schemes to save it, including stealing one of her awful godmother’s statues to flog for cash and in the series finale Fleabag does exactly that. When the series ends, we ultimately don’t know what will happen to Fleabag, or to her coffee shop, at the end of season two. But we know that whatever happens she is going to be alright.
That guinea pig café is the heart and soul of Fleabag, so it’s no wonder that fans are lining up to visit a pop up version that has opened this week in Los Angeles. Located at 7924 Melrose Avenue, the space is called Hilary’s Café and is open until 9 August from 10am in the morning until 6pm in the evening on a first-come, first-served basis. (Read: there will be queues to enter the café. Plan accordingly.)
Guests who attend will get to see guinea pigs and be treated to free drinks and snacks.
The pop up is run by Amazon Studios – who is behind the US release of the BBC television series – in celebration of the show’s 11 Emmy nominations. (Thanks to those nominations, and the further nine Waller-Bridge’s Killing Eve received, the actor could be in the running to become only the second person in history to win awards for both Best Comedy and Best Drama at the awards ceremony.)
The attention to detail at the café is impeccable. Aside the fact that it’s full of real-life guinea pigs and plenty of guinea pig art, it also features a replica of the bronze statue that Fleabag nicked from her appalling godmother.
We predict that the statue will be the most popular item for selfies at the pop-up spot.
The Fleabag café is at 7924 Melrose Ave from 10-6PM on 8 and 9 August.
