Ever wanted to know how your favourite books were written? A new infographic shows us the pens and typewriters authors like JK Rowling and Agatha Christie used to write their best-selling novels with.

Our modern day work lives are entirely computer-centric. But if you're dreaming of your first big break as an aspiring author, this new infographic suggests that you might have to step back in time and invest in a typewriter - or even a good old-fashioned pen.

The diagram reveals what tools authors and writers including Mark Twain, Game of Thrones author George RR Martin and even Quentin Tarantino use to get their work done.

Despite the rise of technology to help writers and the existence of apps to help you concentrate such as Freedom and Cold Turkey, that block the distractions of the internet, dedicated authors are as committed to their pens and paper as we are to our iPhones.

Rowling used just a pen and paper to draft all the pages of the early Harry Potter novels, and Quentin Tarantino creates his famously gory scripts with a mix of red and black pens.

But if you're looking to take inspiration from the queen of the crime novel, Christie, you might need to invest in a Remington Home Portable No. 2 typewriter, which was what she used to create her famous detectives Poirot and Miss Marple. A staple in the twenties, sadly the beautiful machines are now very rare.

Game of Thrones' Martin still writes his lengthy novels on a Disc Operating System (DOS) - an early computer word processor. Romance author Danielle Steel puts in 20-hour-long shifts when she's writing a book, typing them all out manually on a 1946 Olympia typewriter. It's a wonder she finds it possible to have five books on the go at once.

So if you want to create the next Harry Potter or write a bestselling blockbuster, it's time to disconnect from the digital world and pick up a pen. It is, after all, mightier than a sword.
