From the high fashion to the awe-inducing Miranda Priestley, Devil Wears Prada is one of our absolute favourite films.

And now, finally, it seems as if it’s about to become one of our favourite musical theatre productions, too.

Elton John and Sister Act's Paul Rudnick have teamed up to bring the hit 2006 film to the stage – and, through the power of song, they hope to inject something new into the story of beleaguered fashion assistant Andy (Anne Hathaway) and ferocious magazine editor Miranda Priestley (Meryl Streep).

In the film, we watched as the two butted heads of Priestley’s impossibly high standards – and her plethora of cruel (albeit hilarious) one-liners. However, come the end, the two reached something of an impasse, and developed a begrudging respect for one another.

The film, however, was based on Lauren Weisberger's best-selling 2003 novel – and, while the book told the same basic story, the ending was very… well, it was very different. The main example being that Priestley was less cool and collected, and more a cold-hearted monster.

Which is why it’s very interesting to hear that the musical will be based as much on the book as it is the movie.

Speaking about the project, Elton John said: “Reimagining The Devil Wears Prada for the musical theatre is super exciting.

“I'm a huge fan of both the book and the feature film and a huge aficionado of the fashion world. I can't wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture.”

If anyone can do this story justice, it’s John; he has a long history of penning insanely catchy tunes (Crocodile Rock, anyone?), not to mention has a bevy of successful musicals, such as the Lion King and Billy Elliott, under his belt.

However, while the project is well and truly in the works, there’s no predicted release date as of yet.

By all means, Elton, move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills us.
