Wes Anderson’s next film, Asteroid City, is almost in cinemas, and it has reignited our passion for the director’s unique aesthetic. Here’s how you can get it for yourself.
Wes Anderson is the director who has brought us films such as The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Darjeeling Limited. And just as Anderson returns to work with the same actors over and over again, each film sees him recreate his trademark aesthetic.
His look is both eccentric and retro, often using many shades of the same colour in one scene to create a tonal effect. In fact, colour is arguably his most used and important tool. We immediately associate The Grand Budapest Hotel with pastel pink. Picture Hotel Chevalier and you’ll also see the canary yellow of Natalie Portman’s robe against the matching walls and bed covers.
Anderson’s next release, Asteroid City, is set to land in cinemas this summer and looks set to provide us with yet more interiors inspiration; one exquisitely framed scene from the trailer, showing Scarlett Johansson in a tonal turquoise bathroom, has especially piqued our interest.
Over on TikTok, users are honouring the director in some seriously creative ways, imagining their lives through the prism of his signature style: think perfectly symmetrical shots, pops of colour and title cards written in Anderson’s preferred sans serif font.
