David Attenborough, the undisputed king of wildlife television, is lending his expertise to Netflix.

So mark your calendars and pay your subscription because the eight-part series Our Planet looks incredible.

Due to air on 5 April 2019, Attenborough will narrate the natural history documentary.

“Our Planet will take viewers on a spectacular journey of discovery showcasing the beauty and fragility of our natural world,” Attenborough said as the series was announced on Thursday (8 November). “Today we have become the greatest threat to the health of our home but there’s still time for us to address the challenges we’ve created if we act now. We need the world to pay attention.”

The series, which has been filmed across 50 countries over four years, will take us to places all over the planet – like the Artic wilderness and vast landscapes of Africa – to explore the world’s most precious species. 

Previously, Attenborough has made us sit and pay attention to the plastic problem on the planet with the BBC’s remarkable series, Blue Planet. And this series will try to achieve the same by bringing to people’s attention the issues being caused by climate change – which is why the programme has been produced in collaboration with World Wide Fund for Nature. 

“We’re the first generation to know the full impact of what we’re doing to our planet, and the last that has the chance to do anything about it,” said Colin Butfield, executive director of WWF-UK and executive producer of Our Planet. “We’re at a unique moment in our history where we have the chance to put things right and start on the path towards a better future. 

“Our Planet will showcase the wonders of our world at the critical time when we need global action to protect it.”
