When Heinz Crème Egg Mayonnaise first appeared in the Stylist office (alongside the recommended waffles and crumpets), it seemed like we would have very few takers in sampling the new potential delicacy. 

Slowly and surely, though, a steady stream of sheepish journalists eyed, sniffed and braved the unfamiliar condiment… which, yes, blends Crème Eggs with both egg and mustard.

But what did it actually taste like? Well, here is what everyone made of the Easter treat, in their own words…

“After a fairly hefty build up I was thoroughly disappointed at being neither disgusted nor overwhelmed by the taste of it. It was one of the blandest things I have ever tasted with a slight tang of nothingness.”

“When I first saw it I thought it was an abomination, but I’ll try anything once and I had forgotten my lunch. Confusing at first, the texture of mayonnaise with the chocolatey taste of a Crème egg; odd. But I noticed myself adding more and more to my crumpet which must mean, to my own surprise, I’m a fan.”

“All I have to say is this: no one likes a fence-sitter, and this condiment does NOT know what side it’s on. Is it sweet or savoury? A sandwich filler or dessert topper? I need answers. Also are we 100% sure the people at Heinz are aware that April Fools isn’t a month-long thing”

“It smells like mayonnaise and looks like clumpy mustard, which are words no-one wants to hear about their food. It doesn’t taste savoury, though – this is definitely a sweet spread and not unpleasant. But it does beg the question: why?”

“If the colour magnolia had a taste it would be this. It doesn’t taste of Crème egg or mayo: it’s just a rather bland, sweet spread. If it was totally gross it would actually be better, at least it would have something going for it, it’s the equivalent of saying someone is ‘nice’ – “Neither use nor ornament” as my nan might say.”

“I really didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t pleasant. I was really excited to try this, but kind of in the way you’re excited about horror movies. I wanted to be blown away by grossness or delighted with surprise tastiness. But what I got was a sickly, foamy and distinctly average spread. It smelled of mayonnaise, but it wasn’t mayo-ish enough to have a big impact either way.”

“It definitely smells far too mayonnaise-y and it just made me feel a bit nauseous to be honest. And as somebody who was once mayo’s biggest fan, the fact I think this Crème egg concoction is all kinds of wrong speaks volumes.”

Essentially, the comments can be summed up thus: Crème Egg Mayo really isn’t disgusting. In fact, if you have a sweet tooth it’s probably to your liking. But, to be honest, it just isn’t disgusting or tasty enough to make an impact.

Suffice to say, no one is taking a jar home.

Tempted to try it for yourself? Sadly, Crème Egg Mayo won’t be hitting the supermarket shelves any time soon, but you will have a chance to try it at the Truman Brewery from 11 to 13 April. The pop-up will be open from 

11am-8pm on Thursday and Friday
, and 11am-4pm on Saturday.
