Cool bursts of summer

Sunny days cause behaviour changes. We spend less time on the sofa and more time in beer gardens, brollies are replaced by sunglasses in handbags, dinners go al fresco and rather than looking for ways to warm up, we need ways to cool down.

No need to miss out on your afternoon pick-me-up though: Starbucks have a different way to experience coffee. Made with real fruit juice, Starbucks Refreshas are lightly caffeinated with Green Coffee Extract. Cool Lime Starbucks Refresha beverage is a lively blend of lime, citrus and hints of mint and cucumber, shaken with real lime slices and served with ice, Valencia Orange Starbucks Refresha beverage combine three varietals of orange with floral and fruity notes from orange peel, cardamom, jasmine and apricot, lightly caffeinated with Green Coffee Extract and served over ice.

Starbucks Refreshas aren’t the only things popping up for summer. In celebration of Starbucks Refreshas, we round up the coolest places to chill out over the warmer months:

Hot Tub Cinemas Shoreditch, London

If winter film-watching is about snuggling up in your onesie, then summer movie nights should be about lazing about in your swimming costume, which is where Hot Tub Cinemas come in.

Until September, the pop-up cinema has set up camp on the rooftops of Rockwell House in Shoreditch and customers can either purchase whole tubs to share with friends or buy individual tickets to share with fellow hot tubbers. The programme is packed with lovable classics, like Bridget Jones’s Diary, Team America and Ghostbusters.

The Shed Southbank, London

A new performance space on South Bank (joined to the National Theatre) will set the scene for some of theatre’s most exciting artists until the end of its tenancy in April next year.

An eclectic summer line-up includes a new version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet by Ben Power (24 July – 18 August) and play-meets-gig The Hush; a unique collaboration between actors, sound designers and theatre-makers (17 July - 3 August)

Tickets are priced at £12 and £20. Buy them here.

Skate Kings Cross, London

A new roller rink has just opened at King’s Cross, aiming to recreate the energy that surrounded the legendary Bagley's roller disco of the early 2000s. It’s open until 6 September every day except Monday, but the highlights will surely be Friday and Saturday’s disco nights, when the cream of London's DJs brings you the best of future disco brilliance.

Tickets cost £13, available in advance with a select number of tickets on the door.

Number 26 Pop-up shop, Stoke-on-Trent

This super-cool boutique opened under a two-month arrangement, and was meant to be closing at the end of July, but Number 26 (named so because it resides at 26 Town Road) is about to lose its pop-up status, announcing recently they’re staying for good. Selling everything from vintage clothing and retro records to cute cushions and sweet treats, it’s definitely worth moseying down to Stokey for – especially if you’re looking for a cool and unique gift.

Screenfields Spinningfields, Manchester

Open-air screenings are all the rage for summer, but what makes Spinningfields’ Screenfields stand out is two things: the fact audiences vote for what film is being shown, and the ‘Lovers’ Lawn’ featuring double deckchairs. The films play on Thursday evenings (until 12 September), with the 'flick picks' released every Friday. One film will be a favourite played in previous years at Screenfields, and the other will be a film that's new. Voting opens every Wednesday at 9am, with the winning film announced at 5.30pm on Wednesday evenings. Tickets range from free to £6, depending on which lawn you’re in and whether you get a deckchair.
