Clueless the Musical finally has a premiere date – and we are freaking out

This is totally important.

Grab the Dionne to your Cher, because Clueless is being given a musical makeover.

We totally paused while trawling the internet this week, because Entertainment Weekly has only gone and confirmed that the stage adaptation of the popular Nineties movie will premiere off-Broadway in November as part of the New Group’s 2018-19 season.

It makes perfect sense, to be honest: as Cher once informed us, anything you can do to draw attention to your mouth is a good thing – and singing theatrical power ballads is pretty much the best possible way to do this.

So far, there are very little details known about the show. However, Amy Heckering – who directed the original movie – previously told Entertainment Tonight that she has taken on a very important role in bringing Clueless to the stage.

“I’ve written the, what they call the book and it’s a jukebox musical,” she said.

Heckering also revealed that Kristin Hanggi, director of Broadway show Rock of Ages will direct the new stage show, while Dodger Theatricals, the company behind for Jersey Boys and Into the Woods will produce it.

And, while Heckerling seemed pretty confident about the song choices (we really, truly hope there’s a fun You’re A Virgin Who Can’t Drive number), it seems her biggest worry at the moment is the cast.

“Well casting – that’s like going to be like the main problem,” she said.

Of course, fans will know already that Alicia Silverstone played the fashion savvy, wealthy teenager Cher Horowitz in the original film, starring alongside Brittany Murphy, Stacey Dash, Paul Rudd and Donald Faison.

And, while Silverstone will be a hard act to follow, Heckerling has already floated a few ideas as to who could fill the star’s expensive Mary-Jane shoes.

“Katy Perry has expressed interest, and I love her to death,” she told Rolling Stone at the time.

If Perry can’t find time in her busy schedule, though, Heckerling added that “maybe Iggy Azalea would do it,” after the singer channelled Cher in her video for Fancy.

Of course, the show has yet to be given a UK release date. However, as seen with the likes of Aladdin and Hamilton, it is only a matter of time until it wings its way across the ocean to sate the musical appetites of British Clueless fans everywhere. We hope.

Anyway, we will bring you more news on the Clueless musical as we get it. Hopefully not sporadically…
