Cleaner ruins million dollar artwork

A cleaner accidentally ruined a $1million (£625,000) piece of art in the Ostwall museum in Dortmund by removing what she thought was a “stain”.

'When It Starts Dripping From The Ceiling' featured wooden planks and a discoloured plastic bowl. The late Martin Kippenberger (his work is pictured above) intended it to look as though the bowl had been stained by water which the cleaner decided to tackle.

A Damien Hirst work – which featured ashtrays, half-full coffee cups and beer bottles – was similarly cleaned up in 2001 by a cleaner at London’s Eyestorm gallery.
