You need to watch this unlikely Christmas advert hit

Tis the season to watch adverts – willingly, no less. And, this year, we’ve certainly had some humdingers from the likes of  John LewisM&SSainsbury’sHeathrow Airport, and more.

However they’ve all been bested on YouTube by a beautiful little commercial for Polish auction website, Allegro, which has gone viral after being viewed almost 4.2 million times in just two days.

Titled English for Beginners, the two and a half minute film begins as an elderly gentleman stares out of his window at the rain pelting against the panes. Unable to venture outside, he strokes his faithful doggy pal before heading over to his computer and, seemingly spontaneously, orders an English for Beginners book.

Our Polish friend soon sets to work, placing post-it notes over almost everything he owns in his home to help him nail those all-important words.

We watch as he stands in front of the mirror, repeating the words “I am, you are, he, she, it is,” over and over again – and we even see him donning headphones to continue his lessons while he’s out and about.

Over time, he picks up a swear word (or two) while watching a few English-language gangster films – which makes for a pretty hilarious scene with his rubber duck.

“I’m gonna f**king kill you,” he tells the hapless bathtime toy, cocking his fingers into a gun shape and pointing them into its beaked face.

The effect is, of course, somewhat ruined by the gentleman’s penchant for bubbles – not to mention that fetching shower cap.

However it quickly becomes apparent that the elderly man is teaching himself English for a reason – particularly when we see him repeating the words “you are perfect”, and “I love you” over and over again.

Which makes sense. After all, the latter three are probably the most important words in any language.

As he packs up his suitcase, switches off all the lights, and hands his dog over to the sitter, we realise that our friend is leaving his home in Poland for Christmas – and that he is heading over to the UK to spend it with someone very special indeed.

Watch the heart-warming conclusion for yourself:

While many assumed that the old gent was learning English in a bid to find romance, it turns out that this ad is celebrating a very different type of love; that of family.

His son has moved to the UK and started a family of his own over there – and our old friend is desperate to make a connection with his young granddaughter.

When he comes face-to-face with the little girl, he soon puts his language skills to good use.

“Hi, I am your grandfather,” he tells her.

A spokesperson for Allegro told BuzzFeed: “For years, we’ve strived to make both Allegro – the largest e-commerce platform in the CEE region – as well as our communication to customers bring joy, touch the heart and cause a mile.

“Such is this ad: about a grandfather who overcomes obstacles to reunite with his loved ones living abroad. Many Polish people share the same experience.

“Nearly one million Poles have decided to leave the country in search for a job, mainly heading the United Kingdom.

“Despite the relatively close distance between the countries, family ties tend to weaken. Therefore, Christmas for many is a difficult time in which we yearn for more.

“But the story we are telling is all-purpose and can be easily understood by any other nation or community who can easily link the happy ending of a smile and tears of emotion to their daily human experience.”
