What skills are workplaces searching for in 2023? Tech knowhow, leadership and communication are key.

It’s drummed into us from the minute we start working that what we really need to build is transferable skills. It doesn’t matter if the job you’re doing isn’t exactly in line with the big, dream position, say those in the know, because you’ll still pick up skills that will benefit you in your next position, and the one after that.

But what actually are transferable skills? Which skills are worth working on? And which should you be bigging up on your CV and in interviews?

A new bit of research gives us a push in the right direction. New data from Open Study College rounds up the transferable skills that employers, with jobs in the highest earning region, are looking for in potential candidates. So in short, these are the skills workplaces that will pay you the big bucks are after.

Tech skills reign supreme, as you might expect, but what may come as a surprise is the prevalence of ‘soft’ skills in the top 10, such as verbal communication and being able to work well with other people.

The top 10 transferable skills for high-paying jobs:

  1. Computer and technology competency with hardware and software systems
  2. Leadership skills
  3. Excellent verbal communication skills
  4. The ability to use your initiative
  5. Business management skills
  6. Customer service skills
  7. To be thorough and pay attention to detail
  8. To be flexible and open to change
  9. The ability to accept criticism and work well under pressure
  10. The ability to work well with others

Robbie Bryant, careers and education expert at Open Study College, said: “We conducted this piece of research to find out what core skills employers are looking for and how people can use this to potentially earn a higher salary. Some of these skills will of course be a direct result of experience or natural flair, but many can be developed, and proven, through qualifications.

“Studying a business course, for example, can provide a broad range of transferable skills including presentation skills, management and communication. A core skills subject is also a great option leading to solid expertise in problem-solving and decision-making. Studying from home, via online courses, is also ideal for people who are currently employed and looking to broaden their skills whilst maintaining that all-important income.”

That’s a good point to keep in mind: you can build all of these skills outside of your main job, too. If you feel like your current role isn’t giving you the knowledge you need in leadership, technology or accepting criticism, have a think about where else you can pick up this knowledge. Could you sign up to an online course? Or ask your manager for additional training or sessions with a mentor? Maybe get a hobby where you can pick these things up.

Get strategic and make yourself the ideal candidate for whatever job you’re after, then make sure to emphasise all these key attributes in your interviews. Not sure where to start? Building the skills listed above is a good move.
