Looking to take your career in a new direction or just intrigued by which roles will be the most popular this year? New research has revealed that AI is taking centre stage.

Over the past couple of years, conversations around AI (artificial intelligence) have grown massively. Whether it’s using tools like ChatGPT to plan workouts or meal prep or looking at how employees can adopt AI to help them at work, pretty much everyone has an opinion on AI.

Now, new research by LinkedIn has revealed that AI is shaping the future of work. As part of the platform’s Jobs On The Rise List – an annual ranking that tracks the fastest-growing jobs across all industries – the role of artificial intelligence engineer came out on top. LinkedIn points to how this shows a shift in how we work and the skills that will be most valuable to workplaces, with technology at the forefront of employers’ minds.

Another area that’s growing rapidly is workplaces seeking employees with sustainability expertise. Demand for these roles grew by 11.6% last year and jobseekers with green skills or titles see a 54.6% higher hiring rate than the workforce overall.

The way we work is also changing, with flexibility remaining a key concern despite some workplaces pushing for more days back in the office. With research in 2024 finding that hiring for remote roles is declining, despite workers wanting flexibility, LinkedIn also found in its year-long research that remote roles remain some of the most competitive roles on its platform – with over three times the share of applications compared to the share of available remote roles. However, it’s not all bad news; the UK saw one of the highest shares in remote job applications (18%) and hybrid job postings (40%) across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
