When it comes to what Gen Z is looking for in a job, the top perk is flexible working. “Not everyone thrives in the morning or in a busy office,” says Fitzgerald. “Flexibility lets employees excel in their own way, and employers shouldn’t see this as a negative.”

1. Embrace flexibility

“The key for businesses is to adapt and collaborate with employees to create solutions that work for everyone,” says Fitzgerald. “If timeliness becomes a challenge, open and collaborative conversations are the way forward. It may take some getting used to, but when done right, flexible working benefits everyone. If autonomy boosts productivity and happiness, it’s a win-win.”

2. Communication is key

“Addressing these generational differences, such as differing attitudes towards punctuality in the workplace, requires open communication, mutual understanding and a willingness to adapt,” says Rechkemmer. “Resolving these differences is the key to healthier workplace dynamics, productivity and team cohesion.”

3. Keep expectations clear

“In order to help bridge this generational gap, employers can implement flexible work policies that accommodate varying preferences around time, while still setting clear expectations for deliverables and performance,” advises Rechkemmer. “Emphasising results over rigid time schedules can bridge the gap, ensuring that all employees feel respected while maintaining productivity. By creating an environment where both work styles are recognised and valued by managers, workplaces can encourage collaboration and reduce tensions caused by generational differences.”

4. Encourage intergenerational collaboration

It’s important to remember that while older generations may need to be more flexible, they have a lot of knowledge and wisdom that the younger workers can lean into. “We can all learn from each other,” agrees Rechkemmer. “Working across generational divides allows younger employees to learn from the experience and structured communication of older generations, and older employees can learn from Gen Z’s more laid-back approach that emphasises a good work-life balance.”

One thing is clear: flexibility is the new non-negotiable, and the freedom to choose what works for you is highly valued. As Turton puts it: “The clock doesn’t dictate life anymore – we do.”
