Looking for a job that feels meaningful and gives you a better sense of purpose? A new study has found just how important this is to workers today.
No matter what industry you work in or what your role entails, there’s no denying the sense of pride we get from feeling like we’ve made a difference or done something meaningful during our time at work.
New research by Tomorrow University has highlighted just how important this is to many working adults today, with two-thirds of people saying that they’d quit their current role in order to find a job that gives them a better sense of purpose. Furthermore, seven in 10 people said that purpose is very or extremely important in defining career choices, while 57% said the key to being happy at work was being in a field that aligns with their values and passions.
When asked how people defined what ‘purpose’ meant to them, nearly six in 10 pointed to continuous learning and personal growth opportunities in the workplace. The value of this on mental health was undeniable, with 90% agreeing that working with a sense of purpose positively impacts their mental health.
57% want to work in a field that aligns with their values
Commenting on the study, Dr Thomas Funke, co-founder and CEO at Tomorrow University, said: “Our research shows that people want more from their careers, but it’s important to remember, purpose is a journey. Almost 60% of people surveyed define ‘purpose’ as continuous learning and personal growth. It’s about commitment to personal growth and inner work.
“Nobody knows exactly what the future of work will look like but with 40% of job skills expected to change, one thing is clear: adaptability is essential to future-proof careers. Education is powerful in this transition. The way we learn should equip professionals with the technological literacy and human skills to grow continuously, build a fulfilling career and, most importantly, make a positive impact on the world. It’s why individuals, government bodies, business leaders and educators alike must champion a future-focused education model that places purpose at the centre.”
