If you’re looking to change up your work situation this year, here’s what you need to know to make the process as smooth as possible…
After a couple of years in which career goals have often had to take a back seat in favour of hanging on to the job you’ve got, 2022 promises to be the year when many of us look to get our work aspirations back on track.
If you’re currently exploring new employment opportunities, you’re not alone. According to new research from LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network, 63% of surveyed women are considering changing their current job in 2022, while 26% of women reported feeling more confident interviewing for a job via Zoom since the pandemic started.
The reasons behind this desire to move are varied, although some priorities naturally lead the way – 41% of surveyed female workers cited wanting more money as their primary motivation, while 32% of women would move to secure a better work/life balance.
So, with the job market somewhat changed after two years of a global pandemic and huge swathes of the population looking to move at the same time, how can you make sure you stand out and get what you want in this new landscape?
We spoke to LinkedIn career expert Charlotte Davies to get her advice on everything from moving into a new sector to asking for what you really want…
1. Polish your skills
If you’ve spent the last few years keeping your head above water, now might be a good time to boost your job prospects by adding to your arsenal of skills.
“Online courses can help bridge the gap when learning new things or when brushing up on existing skills, making you feel more confident in your abilities,” explains Davies.
“LinkedIn Learning has nearly 17,000 courses in total across business, creative and technical categories, and adds around 60 new courses every week, so it’s a great resource to tap into.”
“Also, until 1 February 2022 LinkedIn will be offering a range of courses for free to help job seekers gain skills for their next opportunity, including Video Interview Tips, Finding a Remote Job and Finding a Job at Companies That Embrace Diversity and Inclusion, to name a few.
“LinkedIn also recently ran Jobs Bootcamp (available to watch back here), a series of live events on the platform, with sessions on everything from finding a job that fits your values and ambition to making a career pivot.”
2. Prepare to negotiate
LinkedIn found that 37% of surveyed workers want to change jobs in a bid to earn more money - if you’re one of them, start by doing your homework.
“Doing your salary research will help you know your worth and make you feel more confident in your request,” says Davies.
“Start by looking at job adverts for similar roles and compare what these pay. Tools such as LinkedIn Salary can also be really helpful in breaking down salaries by job title, companies and location, to ensure what you’re asking for is realistic.
“Once you’ve received a job offer, be open to negotiating. There are many ways you can negotiate. Ask yourself what else you can bring to the organisation. Do you have experience in an area that your new team isn’t familiar with? Are there on-the-job-training opportunities available to help you up-skill? You’ll never know unless you ask.”
3. Work-life balance
LinkedIn has found that 28% of surveyed women feel more confident asking for flexible working since the beginning of the pandemic.
LinkedIn data also reported a 97% increase in remote jobs being advertised in the UK by the end of 2021, meaning that companies are willing to listen when it comes to ensuring your new job will fit around a schedule that works for you.
“When you’re interviewing, always be clear on what you want,” advises Davies. “Flexible working comes in different shapes and sizes and means something different for everyone, so it’s important to be clear on what you’re asking for.
“Do you want to reduce your hours, change your start and finish times or work remotely? Do some research into the kind of flexible schedule that works for you and be as specific as possible when asking.
“It also wouldn’t hurt to package up your request as something that will work well for your role and the wider business too. Make the case for why you’ll be successful working more flexibly.
“Feel free to use examples from your previous role on how remote working has made you more productive on certain tasks. For example, will working remotely mean you can start earlier or stay connected later to help clients in other time zones?”
4. Consider a career pivot
If you’re stuck in a rut and want to make a career change, now’s the time to be bold and go for it.
“It’s very easy to fall into the trap of thinking a complete career switch is too challenging, but it is possible and in fact, very few people follow the traditional linear career path these days,” explains Davies.
“You can start off with incremental pivots at your current company. Have a think about what you want to be known for and what motivates you so that you can filter opportunities and start to build a bridge from your current role to your new one.
“When looking at job descriptions in other industries, don’t worry about ticking every box as transferable skills can go a long way, so make sure you’re highlighting these to prospective employers and recruiters. If you’re looking for inspiration for the type of roles that might be right for you, LinkedIn’s Career Explorer can help – it’s super easy to find new roles that might be a good match for your existing skills.
“We’ve seen that the jobs market has had a real boost in recent months and there are many opportunities available in a range of industries, so there’s never been a better time to pivot your career.”
