While frustrating to experience, the fracturing of teams once someone rises up the ranks is not uncommon, explains career coach Emily Button-Lynham. “Often, boundaries are really important in workplaces, particularly for those in leadership roles,” she tells Stylist.

“I don’t think that every boss can be close friends with their employees because if you want to drive a high-performing team, be taken seriously and deliver what may sometimes be tough messages, there should be a sense of distance,” she continues.

“However, there are ways you can approach it with really open and honest conversations with everyone within your team to almost reset their expectations. Tell them what they can expect from you – support, advocacy and a listening ear, but not someone to complain to after too many drinks. Because if you still want to socialise with the team and be part of it, you have to do it knowing that you have a level of responsibility.”
