Gather your urban family, stick on some Chaka Khan and prepare for some v. v. good news. Helen Fielding is presenting a Bridget Jones documentary 25 years after introducing her to the world.

The BBC have announced that Fielding will look back at the origins of our favourite fictional thirty-something in Being Bridget, exploring her cultural impact since first penning diary entries in newspapers, books and films.

“It’s great that Bridget Jones is resonating with the daughters of the original audience - girls in their late teens and early twenties. Even if it does make me feel like Snow White’s mother,” Fielding exclusively told Stylist.

“At heart Bridget Jones was always about the gap between how we’re expected to be and how we actually are. In the age of social media that gap has got horrifyingly wider. I hope Bridget helps people to laugh and remember that being warm, funny human and flawed is OK and doesn’t require an Instagram filter. “

In the age of Fleabag and #MeToo, the documentary will explore how Bridget’s story reflects changing attitudes to women – and the way their stories are told. Being Bridget will feature interviews with Helen Fielding and the friends who inspired the original characters along with rarely seen archive and celebrity fans playing tribute.

Last year, a new extract from Bridget’s diary was published in The Times as a response to the Me Too movement. “What did I put up with, in the days of these diaries, without even knowing I had the right not to put up with it?” she wrote. “Talk about #MeToo.”

She added: “I just accepted that part and parcel of having a job was that my boss would stare freely at my breasts, not know my name, and ask me to put a tight dress on to make an idiotic speech.”

It proved the power and relevance that Bridget still has quarter of a century after Fielding’s comic creation instantly became a cultural phenomenon. She was even listed on Radio 4 Woman’s Hour Power List 2016.

Alas, fans will have to wait until 2020 to catch up with the Fielding and Bridget. Until then: “Shut up, please. I am very busy and important.”

Being Bridget is part of the BBC Arts year-long celebration of literature in 2020.
