Books, Beautiful Books

On cold winter evenings, there's nothing better than curling up with a classic book - and how much nicer when that book is as beautiful as it is enthraling. With that in mind, we've rounded up our favourite editions featuring the very prettiest covers to take pride of place on your bedside table.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland And Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll

Available from Waterstones and waterstones.com, £14.99

A classic tale that every little girl and boy loves. The simple pink flamingo silhouette design looks stylish and is definitely a book cover for the adults to fawn over.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Other Jazz Age Stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Available from Amazon.co.uk, £8.20

F. Scott Fitzgerald book covers are usually wonderfully illustrated. If you’re not a fan of this cover then have a look at The Great Gatsby or The Beautiful and Damned.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Truman Capote

Available from Amazon.co.uk, £ 5.21

This 50th anniversary edition didn’t feature the classic Audrey Hepburn image from the book’s film but we don’t think that it's lost any of it's iconic status. This striking cover is eye catching and sleek.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, Elaine Showalter

Available from Waterstones or waterstones.com, £12.99

First published in 1868, this tale of the March sisters growing up in Civil War New England has been adored by millions of little girls worldwide. The simple brown cover with pink scissors is classic and timeless.

Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh

Available from Waterstones or waterstones.com, £18.99

This book is a newby compared to the other classics on this list, it was only published in 2008, but we love the pretty cover. But don’t be fooled by appearances, the story is about opium production and trading, pirates, love and hate – a jolly good read.

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

Available from agathachristie.com, £6.99

What better way to spend Christmas than curling up with a great thriller? You can’t get more iconic than this Agatha Christie classic.

The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton

Available from penguinclassics.co.uk, £7.99

Penguin Classics have teamed up with RED so that 50% from the sale of each book will go to the Global Fund to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. Not only will you be donating to a worthy cause, but the books are much loved classics and the redesigned covers look fabulous!

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Available from anthropologie.eu, £12.99

A bright, smartly embossed canvas cover of the classic Jane Austen tale. Perfect excuse to replace a well-thumbed favourite.

Vanity Fair by William Thackeray

Available from penguinclassics.co.uk, £8.99

We love the Penguin Classics redesign with RED so much that we had to feature two of them. William Thackeray’s Vanity Fair looks contemporary and stunning, and the story of the alluring and ruthless Becky Sharp’s clamber up the social ladder is a timeless read.

Wuthering Heights - Fine Edition by Emily Bronte

Available from Waterstones or waterstones.com, £15.99

White's Books Ltd have some stunning recovered classics on offer – worth checking out. We loved this Wuthering Heights cover with its different shades of grey (maybe representing moodiness/Heathcliff) and hints of red (passion and love?) We’ll let you analyse.
