It seems as if the TV gods are smiling down upon us, because Blind Date – as in, yes, the dating show we all used to watch after Gladiators on a Saturday night – is returning to our screens this year.
For those who don’t remember (who are you people?), Blind Date saw three singles of the same sex perch themselves on impossibly high bar stools on one side of the stage. A partition would then be drawn across, and a single of the opposite sex would appear on the other side to ask them all questions – the catch being that he or she could hear the answers, but never see who was giving them.
Cilla Black, the show’s iconic host, would usually chime in with a few of her legendary catchphrases. And, once all the pun-laden answers had been divulged, ‘Our Graham’ (never seen on screen) would give the audience at home an amusing reminder of each contestant.

The aim of the game was for the questioner to choose a date without ever laying eyes upon them (hence the title), and they’d head off on an all-expenses-paid holiday together. And, in the next episode, Cilla would invite them back on the show to tell everyone whether or not they still liked each other.
Weirdly enough, there were some success stories; three couples who met on the show went on to tie the knot. Sue Middleton and Alex Tatham, who met on the show in 1988, celebrated 25 years of marriage back in 2013.
So it makes sense that TV bosses of 2017 – considering the success of First Dates and the like – are planning on giving us a Blind Dates revival.
However there will, of course, be some changes; we tragically lost Cilla back in 2015, so a new host will have to be found. And, despite the show being an ITV staple back in the day, it’s now set to make a brand-new home for itself on Channel 5.
Speaking to The Sun, show insiders explained: “Blind Date is the original dating show and it’s huge news to bring it back.
“It’s a classic format that will be rebooted to make it young, sexy and modern. Expect sparks to fly.
“In an age of Tinder, you have got to earn the right to love on this show.”
While a host hasn’t yet been found (and they have some incredibly big shoes to fill), the likes of Olly Murs, Scarlett Moffatt and Vicky Pattison are said to be in the running.
Fingers crossed that the show isn’t changed too much; we still expect a “lorra lorra laughs” when we tune in later this year…
